The public panel discussion, which was held via Zoom, was organized by the ECORISK2050 project and Stockholm University’s Department of Environmental Science “ECo-Series” seminar series. The panel is composed of Dr. Marlene Ågerstrand (Stockholm University), Dr. Linn Persson (Swedish Society for Nature Conservation), and Dr. Henrik Selin (Boston University), and is moderated by Prof. Matthew MacLeod (Stockholm University).
In the push towards a circular and sustainable economy, the liquid and solid effluents of wastewater treatment plants are potential resources that can be used to ease pressures on irrigation water and nutrient fertilizer. However, these waste resources can contain a range of harmful compounds, such as heavy metals and/or organic contaminants, posing potential risks to the environment and bringing into question how they can be reused safely.
In this public panel discussion, ECORISK2050 and Stockholm University’s Department of Environmental Science “ECo-Series” seminar series brings together a panel of world-renowned experts from Sweden, Israel, and The Netherlands to discuss current issues related to wastewater resource reuse. The panel is composed of Prof. Dr. Annemarie van Wezel (the University of Amsterdam), Prof. Benny Chefetz (the Hebrew University of Jerusalem), Anders Finnson (Svenskt Vatten, i.e., The Swedish Water and Wastewater Association), and is moderated by Assistant Prof. Marlene Ågerstrand (Stockholm University).
Professor Wayne Landis from the Huxley College of the Environment at Western Washington University delivers a virtual lecture on ecological risk assessment in the era of climate change.
Colleen Lanier Christensen, MPH, a PhD student at the History of Science Department at Harvard University, delivers a virtual lecture on the history of the OECD Chemicals Programme that examines how responses to the threat of toxic chemicals and the imperative of economic growth became intertwined. This seminar was part of the ECORISK2050 MOOC seminar series, and was hosted in conjunction with the Stockholm University Department of Environmental Science ECo-Series seminars.
Dr. Anne Fairbrother, D.V.M., PhD., from Exponent in Seattle, Washington delivers a virtual lecture on advances in the field of risk assessment over the past several decades that have not been incorporated at the regulatory/policy level. This seminar was part of the ECORISK2050 MOOC seminar series and was delivered to members of this project through Zoom.
Dr. Julie Verheyen of the Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology, Evolution and Conservation at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven delivers a virtual lecture on how the toxicity of pesticides increases under global warming. This seminar was part of the ECORISK2050 MOOC seminar series and was delivered to members of this project through Zoom.
Professor Antonio Di Guardo, from the Department of Science and High Technology at the University of Insubria, delivers a virtual lecture on dynamic modelling of the fate of chemicals in the multimedia environment. This seminar was part of the ECORISK2050 MOOCs seminar series and was delivered as part of a four-day online writing workshop to members of the project through Zoom.
Professor Valery Forbes, dean of the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota, delivers a virtual lecture on how science can inform policies and decision making and obstacles to improving the scientific basis of ecological risk assessment. This seminar was part of the ECORISK2050 MOOCs seminar series and was delivered to members of this project through Zoom.
Dr. Kasper Kok from the Department of Environmental Sciences at Wageningen University delivers a virtual lecture on the development of integrated modelling scenarios in the context of future chemical pollution. This seminar was part of the ECORISK2050 MOOCs seminar series and was delivered as part of a four-day online writing workshop to members of the project through Zoom.
Dr. Ullrika Sahlin from Lund University delivers a virtual lecture titled “Master your uncertainty when assessing risk”. This seminar was part of the ECORISK2050 project’s MOOC webinar series and was delivered to members of this project through Zoom.
Dr. John Carriger from the U.S. EPA’s Office of Research and Development in Cincinnati, Ohio delivers a virtual lecture on integrating decision analysis and causal modelling with ecological risk assessments.
Dr. Melissa Gomis, the Graphics & Communication Officer at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Technical Support Unit (Working Group I), delivers a lecture on insights into scientific visual communication at the Department of Environmental Science and Analytical Chemistry (ACES) at Stockholm University on Tuesday November 4th, 2019. This seminar was part of the regular ACES seminar series, and was simultaneously incorporated into the ECORISK2050 MOOCs.
Dr. Ir. Tim van Emmerik of Wageningen University delivers a lecture on plastic debris in rivers at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) on Tuesday October 8th, 2019. This was a seminar delivered at NIVA, and it was simultaneously incorporated into the ECORISK2050 MOOCs.
Ian Edhlund of Clemson University delivers a lecture on the application of mathematical modeling languages and statistical optimization methods in physiologically based toxicokinetic (PBTK) to quantitative adverse outcome pathway (qAOP) models at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) on Thursday September 12th, 2019.
